Polyester Melange Fleece advantage:
Fleece garments are usually lining jobs: the cloth is warm but not presentable, so you add a lining or a second fabric for the facings, and the cost goes up before anything has been designed. Polyester Melange Fleece is built the other way round. It is single-sided: one face is brushed for warmth, the other stays a clean knit face, so the soft side sits against the skin and the flat face is what the customer sees. An unlined hoodie or jacket gets its comfort without a lining to pay for. The 2x2 rib runs through the cloth, giving the surface a fine vertical line and taking some of the stretch and recovery off the spandex. At 250g/m² it sits between the heavy outerwear fleeces and the thin linings: warm under a coat in winter, light enough to be the garment in spring.

Melange has moved from a niche look to a default, and the driver is a change in what shoppers ask for: less print, more tone. Blending 13% viscose into a polyester fleece produces that tone with no printing at all, because the two fibres absorb dye at different rates, and it softens the hand enough for the cloth to be worn next to the skin. The 2x2 structure gives the surface a line and takes part of the load off the spandex, which is why 250g/m² can hold a silhouette without feeling heavy. For brands building quiet, tonal ranges, this is the cloth that does the volume work. How to extend it: an undyed option for natural-tone collections, a 300g version for outerwear, and a matching rib for trims.

- Settle the face direction before the marker. A single-sided cloth only looks right one way up, and a flipped piece won't show until the garment is made.
- Cut with the rib, not across it. The 2x2 structure has its own give, so a panel turned against the grain behaves differently once it is on a body.
- Re-check the block for the weight. At 250g/m² this hangs nearer a mid-weight jersey than a heavy fleece, so a pattern drafted at 300g comes out longer than planned.
- Reset the ribs after sewing. A ribbed knit can sit puckered off the machine; a light steam on a form relaxes it without flattening the brush.
- Finish the inside. The reverse is not a face you can show, so necklines, cuffs and hood openings want binding or a clean coverstitch.
