A twill is a strange thing to find in a knit, and it is the reason this cloth doesn't behave like the fleece next to it on the shelf. Melange Brushed Fleece Fabric has the diagonal running through the face, so from a distance the cloth reads as woven: a shirt-jacket, an overshirt or a chore coat cut in it looks like cloth rather than like a sweatshirt, which is what the workwear-influenced labels have been asking for. The structure does something practical as well. A twill knits up denser than a plain jersey, so there is some grip in the hand and the cloth holds a shape at a collar and a placket without help. It is single-sided, and the two faces are used deliberately: the twill face is the one that takes topstitching, patch pockets and metal, and the brushed side is the one that sits against the body. Twenty per cent viscose is the highest share in this range, and it is where the wool impression comes from; buyers who pay for hand feel it straight away, which matters in markets that price on touch rather than on weight. At 250g/m² it is a layering weight that still looks substantial on the rail, and the colour card runs to eighteen shades, so a range can be built from stock.
